5 interceptions, 8 clearances; Ex-Manchester United captain dominant in Inter win

Nemanja Vidic

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic was in Europa League action last night.

Manchester United have had no European football to look forward to this week, but former captain Nemanja Vidic has been in action.

After making a summer switch to Inter Milan, the Serbian defender has continued to show why he is one of the most dominant defenders in football, turning in a terrific performance against Dnipro in the Europa League.

Vidic won three tackles and made five interceptions as Inter won 1-0 against the Ukrainians, while his eight clearances was more than his fellow three defenders made combined.

Inter kept a clean sheet, scoring through a goal from Danilo D'Ambrosio, set up by midfielder Fredy Guarin.

It was in February that Vidic announced he would be leaving United, during a miserable season under the management of David Moyes.

It was expected that the Red Devils would add an experienced central defender to replace him, especially with Rio Ferdinand allowed to leave too.

United failed to, somewhat bemusingly, despite bringing in new manager Louis van Gaal in place of David Moyes.

Van Gaal's three at the back system would likely have suited an ageing Vidic, and re-energised him, and you have to wonder had he known what was to come, would he still have decided to leave?

In showing he still has what it takes last night to dominate a game and ensure his side a clean sheet, it's likely though it's United who miss him even more, than the other way around.
