The presence of Ronald Koeman and the manner in which he sets his teams up convinced defender to leave Atletico Madrid.
Versatile defender Toby Alderweireld may have been restricted to tertiary choice centre back at Atletico Madrid but the Belgian international had priceless World Cup pedigree at the recent tournament in Brazil.
Whenever a player of his calibre is available for loan on the summer market, there is usually a number of clubs vying for his signature.
Alderweireld was no different as Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and AS Monaco were all linked with the 25-year-old, however, he became enamoured with the Southampton project for two reasons: the presence of Ronald Koeman and the way in which he likes his teams to play football.
Alderweireld said, as quoted by the Southern Daily Echo: "This was the best step - it’s a club that wants to grow, it has good facilities, so it was the perfect step.
“I knew a little bit how the trainer wants to play football, and that’s one reason why I wanted to come here. I wanted to play and the trainer really, really wanted me, so that was a very important thing in why I signed.”
Alderweireld joined the Saints on a season-long loan deal.
He has already made one appearance and completed six clearances, two interceptions and four tackles.
