Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen has given his opinion on the performance of the Premier League teams in the first round of the Champions League this season.
And it’s quite damning.
Gutting for City. None of our 4 teams been that impressive in the first round of Champions League matches. http://t.co/AsPBJk0TuG— michael owen (@themichaelowen) September 17, 2014
The Premier League is widely acclaimed to be ‘best domestic league in the world’, but only one of its representatives could win in Europe’s premier club competition this week.
That was Liverpool, who edged past Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad 2-1 at Anfield in Group B. An injury-time penalty from Steven Gerrard saw the Reds pick up all three points in their first Champions League match in five years.
Arsenal were also in action on Tuesday, but they stumbled to a 2-0 away defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Group D in Germany.
English champions Manchester City and this season’s league leaders Chelsea were in action on Wednesday, but neither managed to win.
While Manuel Pellegrini’s Citizens did give an encouraging performance against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Group E, a late strike from Jerome Boateng saw them lose the contest.
Chelsea took an early lead against Schalke at Stamford Bridge in Group G, but conceded a second-half equaliser to settle for a 1-1 draw.
