Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez has been offered numerous messages of support from the football world after revealing that he is battling testicular cancer.
The football world has taken to Twitter to show its support for Newcastle United’s Jonas Gutierrez, after the winger announced that he is being treated for testicular cancer in his native Argentina.
The 31-year-old midfielder revealed on Argentinian TV that he is undergoing chemotherapy after having surgery following the discovery of a tumour, which was first diagnosed last October.
'When I was told I had cancer, I went home in tears’ he told TyC Sports. ‘In May 2013, I felt very tough pains on my testicle. After some wrong diagnosis, an ultrasound detected the tumour.
‘I came here and I assumed the costs despite having a contract with Newcastle. Money is not important. What is important is my health. I had to start chemotherapy.'
Newcastle, who Gutierrez first joined from Real Mallorca in 2008 before spending the second-half of last season on loan at Norwich, said in a statement: ‘The club has been aware of Jonas's condition for some time but has respected his wish for privacy as he undergoes treatment with his friends and family around him.'
The club's managing director, Lee Charnley, added: 'We have and will continue to offer Jonas our full support.
'We thank our fans for their kind messages of support for Jonas and the thoughts and best wishes of everyone connected to Newcastle United are with him at this time.'
There has since been an outpouring of support for the 22-times capped international following his announcement, with various figures from within the game sending messages of good luck as he begins the final phase of his treatment.
Sending my thoughts and best wishes to Newcastle player Jonas Gutierrez who is battling Testicular Cancer.. Early diagnosis huge factor.
