Ward was ruled out of Derby's match against rivals Nottingham Forest at the weekend, after picking up an injury over the international break when playing for Northern Ireland, but made an excellent comeback last night.
He blasted in Derby's first goal of the night, before capping off their win with a fine left-footed drive.
Ward revealed after the game that he was delighted to get on the scoresheet, but he felt the three points for his side were more important.
"It’s not about me, it’s about the team," he said to Derby's official site. "The most important thing is that we win, obviously there is going to be weeks when other people score the goals.
“We’re all in it together at the end of the day, it’s about the team, not individuals.”
Despite his modest words, it was a performance which earned raved reviews from fans on Twitter who were delighted to have him back available for selection.
Derby went into this season as favourites to win promotion from the Championship and, if they are to live up to expectations, Ward will be key.
At the moment, the club sit in the upper echelons of the division, but they realise there is still more to come and the Rams will be aiming to build upon the momentum gained from their mid-week success at the weekend.
Steve McClaren's side take on Cardiff City at the weekend, where they will be hoping to make it six points from six.
Ward will also be looking to hit the target again and, if he reads the reaction on social media, then he should be filled with confidence after the supporters' reaction.

For 75 minutes of that game we played the football we are capable of. Hughes & Ward were unplayable at times! #dcfc— K I N S W A R (@EmmaKinsey7) September 17, 2014
I often criticise DCFC fans for being blinkered towards some players. Then I remember that Ward can never ever do anything wrong in my eyes.— Katy Diggle (@katybrush) September 17, 2014
