Chelsea fans react to Schalke draw on Twitter: We laughed at United!

Stamford Bridge Inside

The defence - and Nemanja Matic - are cause for concern as Blues supporters now regret laughing at Manchester United…

Chelsea have participated in five matches in all competitions so far this season but have already conceded six goals - with their most recent concession arriving last night, in the club's Group G Champions League match against Schalke 04 at Stamford Bridge.

The statistic has given cause for concern for Blues supporters who believe the new-found weakness at the back is a contrast in nature to the stringent rearguard that shipped just 27 goals in the Premier League last year.

For many Chelsea fans, an attack-happy approach this year - that utilises the creative talents of Francesc Fabregas (who scored against Schalke) - and the prolific nature of Diego Costa, has been to the detriment of "defensive discipline".

Other supporters took to social media to complain about Nemanja Matic, a player who was revered for his performance-level following his arrival in January, as the Serbian is now more attack-minded rather than fulfilling the role he was seemingly bought for - to protect the defence.

Five of Schalke's 13 attempts on goal last night were on target, with Thibaut Courtois saving 80% of those and conceding once.

What is, perhaps, the most telling comment, is that Manchester United's defence became the butt of the jokes in West London, but with Chelsea's new weakness, the Blues are no longer laughing…
