Thierry Henry, Marc Overmars, Patrick Vieira? The Gunners boss singles out his number one.

Arsene Wenger has singled out one signing during his time as Arsenal boss as his greatest - and the result may surprise you.

The Frenchman has signed a barrage of world-class players during his time as Gunners boss, ranging from Thierry Henry and Robert Pires to Marc Overmars and Patrick Vieira - and far, far more.

But, when asked to single out one name, Wenger suggested... Lauren.

The right-sided Cameroonian joined Arsenal in 2000 and formed part of the side that went unbeaten in the Premier League during the 2003-04 season.

"I’d never say which player was the best but I think it’s the signings like Lauren who you spot when nobody else does," Wenger told an Arsenal sponsor when asked who his greatest signing was.

"He was a right midfielder who I played at right back and was one of 'the Invincibles'.

And the Frenchman also revealed he came close to signing former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

"My biggest regret, I was so close, to signing Cristiano Ronaldo," he said, "and not only did I not get him he signed for Manchester United, so that of course still hurts today."

Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on Saturday, following a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League during midweek.
