Stats: He's a quality talent! - Brad Guzan lauds summer signing

Tom Cleverley

Brad Guzan has talked-up Aston Villa's recruitment of Tom Cleverley, having seen him in training and on the pitch.

Midfielder Tom Cleverely, who has been leased to Aston Villa from parent club Manchester United, has left a great impression on his new team-mates at Villa Park - and it is not just because of his ability with the ball at his feet.

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan labeled the 25-year-old a "YouTube sensation" after the player, whose initiation rites in the Midlands included a rendition of Ben E King's Stand by Me, wowed the Villans roster.

"What a singer, what a performance!" Guzan exclaimed on the club's official website.

What excites Guzan most, though, is how swiftly Cleverley has "settled in" and how he is a "talented" footballer of high "quality".

The 30-year-old American said: "His feet are so good. He can pick a pass. He will score some goals for us. He goes box to box - gets up and down the pitch - and work his socks off for the team.

"Those are the qualities you want out of a top-class centre midfielder. And he's certainly one of them. It hasn't taken any of us long to see that in training."

In his Villa debut, Cleverley rarely got on the ball - as is demonstrated by how few touches he received; 26. However, the type of match it was, with Villa tasked with an away game at Anfield and considering the visitors were the ones doing the chasing, rather than the ones enjoying the possession, Cleverley still performed admirable with good pressing and defensive responsibility (duels won, tackles).

Added Guzan: "We're just delighted to see him come into the group. He's had a great football education at Man United and we're excited to have him here."

Cleverley's passing performance in his debut for Villa is a contrast in nature to how frequently he was on the ball in his last match for United, against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season.

But if the player is able to replicate his metronomic style for Villa, the man with the golden voice (and pass) will no doubt inspire the Villa Park fans to do the singing.
