Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno has tasted European success in the past, winning the 2013-14 Europa League with Sevilla, but Tuesday’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bulgarian outfit Ludogrets Razgrad was his first taste of Champions League action.
After Mario Balotelli had opened the scoring with his first Liverpool goal eight minutes before the end, a Ludogrets equaliser on 90 minutes meant it would take a Steven Gerrard spot kick in added time to ensure the club’s return to the competition for the first time in five seasons was a winning one.
While the scoreline wasn’t quite as emphatic as the side would have hoped, Moreno himself put in a solid performance and the Spaniard took to Instagram to express his delight, writing:
‘Happy with my debut in the Champions League and especially for these 3 important points. Come on Liverpool FC !! #LiverpoolFC #championsleague #anfield #happy’
Arriving from Sevilla this summer for a reported £12 million, Moreno has looked impressive so far in his first three Premier League appearances, even scoring in the 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur prior to the international break.
His side's European campaign is set to become more challenging over the coming weeks, however, with a trip to Swiss champions FC Basel followed up with successive fixtures against holders and main group rivals Real Madrid.
