Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas had a side in Champions League action last night as his Zenit St Petersburg side won 2-0 against Benfica in Lisbon to go top of Group C.
Goals from Hulk and Axel Witsel were enough to give the Russian side all three points and for them to top the group in the early stages of the competition - with the home side losing goalkeeper Artur to a red card for preventing a goalscoring opportunity before the midway point of the first half.
They face Monaco in Russia on October 1, after they also got off to a winning start with a 1-0 home victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
The result means Andre Villas Boas's side has now gone 11 games unbeaten, and they inflicted a first home defeat on Benfica in two years.
There seemed to be plenty of reaction from fans on twitter, notably from a couple of Tottenham supporters, after their former head coach registered an opening day victory to make them one of the early favourites to qualify from their group.
Here is a selection of what they had to say:
Avb doing well with zenit, good to see. Still love his face.— Tottenham Talk (@tottenhamtalk1) September 16, 2014
2-0 Zenit. Said the other day that AVB has to get them to Last 16 minimum but should aim for Last 8 with the side they've got.— Nikhil Saglani (@Nikhil_Saglani) September 16, 2014
AVB's Zenit doing the business! I *think* this will be Benfica's first home loss in 52 games if it stays like this. Not helped by Artur red— Jay Jaffa (@jayjaffa) September 16, 2014
So AVB's latest team are doing well in the CL. The irony of life eh?— SpursDiver (@spursdiver) September 16, 2014
Fair play to AVB's Zenit now eleven unbeaten and hand out Benfica's first home loss since 2012.— FootballJunkie⚽ (@kevski07) September 16, 2014
