Manchester City kick off their Champions League campaign with a familiar trip to the Allianz Arena to take on Bayern Munich tonight.
City are no strangers to Bayern having played them in 2011 and 2013 group stages. The first saw Bayern win 2-0 as Carlos Tevez refused to come off the substitutes bench for Roberto Mancini's side, whilst last year's game was even more dramatic, as City recovered from 2-0 down to turn the game around and snatch a 3-2 win in Bavaria.
Pellegrini's men opened the season with two wins against Newcastle United and Liverpool, but then suffered a shock defeat to Stoke before rescuing a late 2-2 draw against Arsenal last weekend. With questions over their ability to translate their Premier League exploits onto the European scene, City must put in a good showing against Pep Guardiola's Bayern.
Bayern have been all-conquering in recent years, and more impressive work in the transfer market means that Guardiola has potentially assembled their strongest squad yet. With two wins and a draw from their three opening Bundesliga games, Bayern have made a strong start to the season and after being embarrassed in the semi-finals against Real Madrid last season, they will have a point to prove tonight and throughout the competition.
