Joe Mason fired Bolton Wanderers to a 3-2 victory over Rotherham on Tuesday night, with the striker netting a 24-minute second-half hat-trick to earn his side their first Championship win of the season.
The hat-trick was the first by a Wanderers player since German Fredi Bobic in April 2002, with the three points moving Dougie Freedman’s team up to 21st in the table on five points from their seven matches.

Currently on a season-long loan from Cardiff City, Mason is enjoying his third stint with the Trotters, having scored six times in 16 appearances during two prior spells with the club last season, and Freedman was delighted with his impact on the night.
‘I do believe the kid has a big future,’ he told Sky Sports after the match.
‘He is still learning his trade and unfortunately for him Cardiff are blessed with lots of strikers. But we can guarantee him game time and in my opinion Joe will get you a fair share of goals.’
With the win proving Bolton’s first since April 26, fans were relieved to have at least seen their side come out on top in a hard-fought clash, and Mason’s first career treble was what had most talking following the match.
I thought it was a coup to get Mason, fully expected Cardiff to hold on to him. Proved how crucial he'll be for us tonight. #bwfc— Gary Yates (@effinnjeffin) September 16, 2014
