Paul Lambert’s Aston Villa tenure might have produced little success so far but, after a hot start to the 2014-15 campaign, the Scottish manager has been rewarded with a new deal which will tie him down to the club until at least 2018.
Arriving from Norwich in June 2012, Lambert’s previous two seasons in the midlands were blighted with financial issues and relegation struggles, with the team slumping to disappointing 15th-place Premier League finishes in consecutive terms, leading to fans calling for his head over the summer.
At one stage it looked as though the former Champions League-winning midfielder would indeed be heading for the exit door but, after a summer rebuild saw the squad instilled with some much-needed veteran additions, his side now sit second in the table with 10 points from their opening four league games.
‘I'm delighted to have the support of our Chairman, Randy Lerner, and Tom Fox, our new Chief Exec, and I'm determined that we continue building the Club to where we all want it to be,’ he told the club’s official website.
‘This is a massive football club, a fantastic football club. I knew the first two years would be tough but we've made progress and now we're beginning to see the benefits of all of that hard work.
‘We're in a much healthier position on and off the pitch and, with a continued sensible approach, we believe we're on the right road to build upon the strong start we've made this season in the Barclays Premier League.’
With the atmosphere around Villa Park at present in complete contrast to the discontent of last season, fans appear to be optimistic about the future for the first time in quite a while, but we’ll let the following reactions sum up whether that includes their views on Lambert’s bumper new deal.
Lambert has done absolutely nothing to justify a new contract. Should have been reviewed at Xmas. No one else would offer him a job #avfc— Paul Hird (@paul_hird) September 17, 2014
Congratulations Paul Lambert on your new deal. Good to see a bit of stability at my great club #avfc— villa mad! (@dom_tracey) September 17, 2014

What to make of Lambert's new contract.. stability is needed but does 4 games make up for 2 years of struggle? (not all his fault obv) #AVFC— Simon Harris (@SRWH2186) September 17, 2014
I don't think Lambert actually deserves a long term contract, but pleased to be facing stability, with a team full of confidence. #avfc— Graham G (@jambonvilla) September 17, 2014
Exactly what's needed at Villa! Stability and a clear indication as to who is in charge of the club. Well done Lambert. #avfc— Keith Cassidy (@Irish_Villan) September 17, 2014
3 months ago I probably would have cried if lambert and Hutton signed new deals. Now I'm quite happy with it. #avfc— Gary Blackwood © (@garyb_avfc) September 17, 2014
Shocked by the length of Lambert's contract but in a culture of fickle owners and regular sackings, managerial stability is vital #avfc— holteender (@holteender6) September 17, 2014
Happy for lambert getting a new deal.. He has had it really tough since he arrived at the Villa.. Another positive step forward #avfc— Willsy (@wills_gary) September 17, 2014
