Girls Fight Misogyny In Video Games.

Tampon Run

Two girls create game to combat sexism in video games.

Two young ladies from from New York High have designed a game which they hope will create awareness about sexism in video games. The girls graduated from a school program called 'Girls Who Code'. A program which helps to increase the numbers of females in the tech industry.

The video game called Tampon Run enables the player to throw tampons at enemies and was designed not only to tackle sexism in games, but to create awareness about conditioning in society at the acceptance of guns and violence, yet the subject of menstruation, a natural process, is usually taboo.

" I have guy friends who can talk about whatever they want, we’re very open about each other, and they’ll make poop jokes and things like that, but whenever I try to bring up menstruation with them and talk about it, I’m just shut down. They don’t want to talk about it. They think it’s gross. Even my brother when I’ve talked to him about it, he shuts me down." Sophie Houser told Time Magazine.

The game is very basic in principle. You have a certain amount of Tampons in your inventory to begin with, and you need them to kill enemies in front of you. Run out of Tampons and you DIE!

I think it makes a better advert than it does a computer game. Still, it is a clever way to use the medium in order communicate an idea.

Or do you think that the sexism topic has been blown out of proportion in regards to video games? A part of me feels that game makers do not intentionally set out to make a game sexist. I believe it is more likely that game makers are trying to please the market which historically has been the male demographic.

Maybe we are just seeing a shift towards an increase in female users playing video games? That game makers are more likely to be pulled up on their depiction of women?

Watch the clip below to see if you fancy a game.
