The news was revealed on Monday night, and rewards the often unheralded importance of a player who has now made 136 appearances for the club since moving from Sunderland in 2011.
The then-20-year-old moved for a reported £20million and, while some questioned the fee, Henderson has gone on to prove himself both at club and international level.
Following the news that the midfielder had been chosen as the new vice-skipper, Gerrard posted a picture of the two men along with the following message:
“Our new vice-captain; he has worked his socks off for this honour. Well done mate.”
Henderson deserves all the credit coming his way now and it will be interesting to see how he performs with this added responsibility.
Something tells me it will make him even more tenacious and vital to Brendan Rodgers' blossoming side.
