While Diego Costa’s seven goals in his first four Premier League games with Chelsea have earned him widespread plaudits, former Premier League striker Dion Dublin has been quick to remind people of his superior record at Aston Villa.
After starting the 1998-99 campaign at Coventry City, Dublin eventually sealed a £5.75 million move to Villa in November, where he would score seven times in his first three league games, including a memorable hat-trick against Southampton.
Hernia and knee injuries saw his scoring run hampered over the rest of the season, but that didn’t stop the ex-Manchester United man from having a joke at Costa’s expense on both Twitter and Instagram, writing:
‘I can't believe it's taken Diego Costa so long to notch 7 goals, come on kid pull ya finger out!! Hahaha #justbanter’
Dublin did, however, note how impressed he’s been with Costa far this season and, following his £32 million arrival from Atletico Madrid, believes the Spaniard will prove well worth his price tag.
I've gotta say that I think Costa has been absolutely amazing so far this season for Chelsea and well worth every penny #prolific— Dion Dublin (@DionDublinsDube) September 15, 2014
Despite netting 36 times in 52 games for the La Liga champions during the 2013-14 campaign, Costa’s failure to top 10 goals in his previous four La Liga seasons, as well as a poor World Cup showing with Spain, had some concerned that the Brazilian-born front man could be a one-season wonder.
Those fears have proved wide of the mark thus far, however, and, though his red-hot run will come to an end at some point, few doubt at this point that the prolific hitman is the real deal.
