Manager Paul Lambert had stated last season that he didn’t expect Alan Hutton to ever appear in an Aston Villa shirt again, but a new long-term deal with the club emphasises just what a remarkable turnaround the right-back has experienced in recent months.
Signed from Tottenham Hotspur under former boss Alex McLeish in 2011, the Scottish international was a regular in his first season at the club but failed to make a single appearance over the next two campaigns following Lambert’s arrival, spending loan spells at Nottingham Forest, Real Mallorca and Bolton Wanderers as the club tried and failed to offload him.
Forming part of the infamous “bomb squad”, few expected him to remain at Villa Park past this summer but, after being handed a second chance during pre-season, along with Darren Bent and Charles N’Zogbia, the ex-Rangers man has gone on to establish himself as the undisputed first-choice at his position.
With the Villa back-line conceding just one goal over their opening four Premier League games, Hutton’s performances have been crucial to the team’s successful start to the season, and reaction among the claret and blue faithful to his new three-year deal suggests the former outcast's reputation has been well and truly restored.
Amazing to think 12 months ago that #avfc fans would be happy with Alan Hutton signing a new contract.— Ëå♏êß (@eames5150) September 16, 2014
Great to have Hutton signed up for another 3 years. Would've been disappointing if he'd have left on a free next year after this start #AVFC— Kurt (@kurtsimonwAVFC) September 16, 2014
Biggest resurgence of a career since Matthew McConaughey. Well done Alan Hutton. #AVFC— Simon Guest (@SimonGuest50) September 16, 2014

Alan Hutton signs a new three-year deal at #avfc. Be surprised if there's been a bigger turnaround in the Premier League this season.— Brendan McLoughlin (@bren_mcloughlin) September 16, 2014
Can't fault Hutton's attitude can you? Need to keep it up now he's got this deal. Make up for lost time. #AVFC— Adam Williams (@AdzW90) September 16, 2014
