This star is 'as good as it gets,' Toffees boss explains

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has hailed Romelu Lukaku's ability, following his goal against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

Roberto Martinez believes that Romelu Lukaku is 'as good as it gets' for a player.

The striker thrived during his time at Goodison Park last season and completed a £28 million move to Everton this summer and his manager has already talked up his quality.

The bludgeoning centre-forward scored his first goal of the season in his side's 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and Martinez believes that it was proof of just how good Lukaku is.

“I have always said that Romelu is as good as it gets,” Martinez said to the Daily Post.

“I am a bit biased. But he is 21, as strong as an ox, very, very agile and mobile in small spaces."

“He is able to hold the play up, he is good in the air and can finish with either his right or left foot and he has a mentality that we want at the football club – he wants to be the best he can be and he wants to win titles."

“For me he is the perfect fit for Everton. It would be disrespectful for me to say he is the best striker in the world but we have found the perfect striker for us and we want to make sure he keeps performing in the manner he did on Saturday.”

Lukaku is the man expected to fire the goals to allow Everton to compete for the Champions League spots again.

The Belgian international forward scored 15 times last season for the Toffees as they climbed to fifth in the league and they will be hoping that he can better that total this time around.

Everton have started this season rather indifferently, with their win over their Baggies providing them with the first three points of the season.

It is a result that Everton will be hoping proves to be the catalyst for a good run of form and, if it is to be, Lukaku will need to keep hitting the back of the net - as Martinez admits the former Chelsea star is the club's main-man this season.

“If you look at Romelu’s career then he has done that since he was 16, so it is nothing new to him,” said Martinez."

“If he was somewhere where he was not the main player then he would find it difficult because since coming through at Anderlecht and commanding a big fee he has always been under those demands."

"He is ready but what I want to make sure is that we have enough stimulation and focus for him to continue developing."
