Predicted Chelsea XI to play FC Schalke - One change from Swansea win

Chelsea Stamford Bride

Here is the potential Chelsea side to play FC Schalke this week in the Champions League.

Chelsea will head into the start of their Champions League adventure full of confidence after a Diego Costa hat-trick helped the side maintain a perfect start to the new Premier League season.

The Blues face FC Schalke in their first group game of the competition this season and Jose Mourinho will be hoping for a positive performance and three early points on the board.

Here’s the side he may select for the game.

GK – Thibaut Courtois

The Belgian has been in decent form already this season and he’s got good experience in this competition.

RB – Branislav Ivanovic

Ivanovic has been consistent at right-back and Mourinho won’t want to break up his defence for the sake of it.

CB – Gary Cahill

Offers the Chelsea defence good height and strength. Will make it difficult for the German side to hit Chelsea aerially.

CB – John Terry

It’s a big ask for Terry to play twice in a week but he’s in good form and Mourinho will want to keep him in the team.

LB – Cesar Azpilicueta

Arguably Chelsea’s most consistent defender over the last year. Looks comfortable playing on the left.

RM – Willian

Willian could come back into the team as a fresh option over on the right hand side.

DM – Nemanja Matic

Matic will most likely be the player who sits and protects the back four. He’s an imposing figure and can get the better of Schalke.

CM – Cesc Fabregas

This is a competition Fabregas knows well and one he’ll be eager to win. He’s been the standout playmaker in the Premier League this season.

AM – Oscar

Oscar is well suited to playing in the hold behind the main striker. Mourinho will be watching him closely.

LM – Eden Hazard

The Belgian is capable of winning games single handed. It will be interesting to see how Schalke try and keep him quiet.

ST – Diego Costa

In great form and he’ll want to translate that across to Europe. He’ll be looking to go one better after being subbed off injured in the Champions League final last season.
