On this day: Arsenal eye £40m Rooney bid, Ronaldo on Old Trafford return

Stories involving Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all feature.

Another round of weekend action has been and gone as focus switches from the Premier League to the start of the Champions League.

Manchester United secured their first win of the season as a new look Louis van Gaal team produced a stunning display of attacking football to see off Harry Redknapp’s QPR.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all dropped points as Chelsea increased their lead at the top of the table.

We’ve taken a look back to this day last year to see which stories were making the headlines.

‘Arsenal eye Rooney January swoop’

The Mirror claimed that Arsenal were eyeing a January move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea tried to buy the forward last summer and Arsenal were also linked with an approach, which never materialised.

An Arsenal move never happened, as former United boss David Moyes convinced Rooney to sign a new contract at the club.

‘Ronaldo rules out United return’

Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo ruled out returning to his old club.

The Real Madrid star is frequently linked with returns to Old Trafford after leaving on good terms and maintaining a positive relationship with the club’s fans.

“Manchester is the past, now my club is Real Madrid. It’s my home and my family and I am really happy here,” said the Portuguese.

‘No regrets for Shelvey’

Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey said he had no regrets over leaving the Reds.

Shelvey linked up with Swansea City after it became apparent he wouldn’t get regular first team football at Anfield.

“I don't regret leaving because I'd probably be on the bench [at Liverpool]. It was a massive decision, but I feel that I've made the right choice in coming away,” the England star told the BBC.
