Arsenal morning news: Wenger speaks on Wilshere, leaps to the defence of Ozil

A round up of news stories this morning about Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has suggested that Jack Wilshere has answered his critics.

The England midfielder has received some negative comments for his performances but he was the standout individual in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City.

“He looked dangerous in the first half as well because he has found his pace back - I've always told him the best way to answer your critics is on the pitch and he did it,” he told the Arsenal website.

Wenger has also leapt to the defence of German star Mesut Ozil, who struggled against the Premier League champions.

Ozil’s form for the Gunners has been inconsistent, following a fine start to life at the club when he joined last summer.

“People will always have this kind of attitude about Ozil. He worked hard and he played quite well. You always see a good Ozil when you watch the game again,” said the boss.

Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is targeting a spot in the England senior side.

The right-back, on loan at West Ham United, believes there is a real chance to make an impression in that position for Roy Hodgson’s team.

“A few of the England boys have retired in the past couple of months - The position is there for the taking. It's up to us all to do the business,” he’s quoted by the Mirror.
