Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been left delighted with the club’s summer transfer activity after six senior stars joined the Old Trafford ranks.
The Red Devils are due big changes following a disastrous campaign last season which saw the club finish the season trophy-less and miss out on European football after a disappointing seventh placed finish in the Premier League.
A number of players simply failed to repeat the high standards set under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and as a result new boss Louis van Gaal has sold or loaned a number of last season's squad.
While there have been questions raised over the abandoning of United’s famed youth policy following the exits of Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck, a huge injection of quality was ultimately needed and an array of top class stars have subsequently joined.
Tasked with being their leader ahead of the new season, England international Rooney couldn’t hide his delight as he told the press of his excitement at lining up alongside the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria for the foreseeable future.
“We always knew we could attract the top players to United but it was a case of what players the manager at the time wanted to bring in,” said Rooney, quoted by the Mirror.
“Obviously last season, we all know we were not good enough. But the time is now right to get these top players to get us back to where we belong – winning titles again.”
“These are exciting, interesting times for United. We have not got off to the best of starts, but we are very confident things will improve quickly.”
“Falcao is a world-class player and I am looking forward to getting back and working with him. I just hope he hasn’t picked up any little injuries while he has been away with Colombia. It’s a great signing but it’s also a great statement of intent from the club.”
