New Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been voted one of the favourites to land this season’s Golden Boot award in a poll conducted by the French publication Le10sport.
The Brazilian-born scorer was earmarked by boss Jose Mourinho towards the end of last season as the number one summer transfer target and the ideal solution to the club’s previous goal-scoring problem.
Last season, the Blues were in prime position to win the Premier League title until a lack of goals and killer instincts in crucial matches allowed Manchester City to overtake them on the home straight.
During the summer, Mourinho wasn’t cautious in confronting the problem as last season’s trio of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba were shipped out and replaced by Loic Remy, Didier Drogba and the £32 million hit-man Costa.
The 25-year-old, who netted 36 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid last season, has shown why he has become one of Europe’s most feared strikers by netting seven goals in his first four Chelsea matches.
While Mourinho called Costa’s seven goals ‘a surprise and not normal’ after his side’s 4-2 victory over Swansea City, the French public aren’t too shocked as they believe the striker is one of the favourites for the season-end’s Golden Boot award.
In a poll conducted by Le10sport asking who will finish as the leading scorer in Europe, the Spanish international received 20% of the votes – pipped only by Cristiano Ronaldo (28%) and Lionel Messi (26%).
So far this season, Costa currently leads the European charts as Ronaldo (2) and Lionel Messi (2) are left trailing in his wake.
While it’s perhaps unrealistic to think the former Atletico Madrid idol will reach the normal figures set by the world’s best two players in La Liga, Didier Drogba’s Premier League record of 29 goals at Stamford Bridge is certainly now an achievable target.
