PHOTOS: Lallana makes Liverpool debut as Villa take the win

Welcome To Anfield

Adam Lallana made his debut in a 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Anfield.

Liverpool have suffered defeat at Anfield after an excellent performance from Aston Villa on Merseyside. It was an early strike from Gabriel Agbonlahor that gave Villa the win as Liverpool, handing full debuts to Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic - who have both been suffering with injuries since their arrivals at the club - struggled to perform to the best of their ability.

So here are some of the more significant images from Anfield yesterday evening.

Villa started the game the better team and got their just rewards from an early corner. A great delivery from Ashley Westwood saw Philippe Senderos beat Dejan Lovren in the air and the goalmouth scramble that ensued saw captain for the day Agbonlahor turn the ball beyond a sprawled Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal.

£16 million signing Mario Balotelli struggled to find his best form. He found Senderos in excellent form in the absence of Ron Vlaar. But the Swiss defender and the Italian certainly had plenty of needle - as Villa clearly tried to wind up the notoriously fiery Italian striker.

Lallana struggled on debut, as he clearly lacked match sharpness following his knee problems. However he did show some good touches late on - striking a left-foot volley that almost caught Brad Guzan by surprise.

Raheem Sterling was rested for the game while Daniel Sturridge was out with a thigh injury suffered on international duty. Liverpool struggled without two of their star men and Sterling could not make a difference when he entered the fray.
