Gary Neville believes that Manchester United need to sign a central defender and a central midfielder in January.
Manchester United not signing a ‘natural’ centre-back in the summer transfer window has been discussed to the point of exhaustion, but club legend Gary Neville believes that there is another area that also needs to be reinforced in January.
It will come as a surprise to many why former United defender Neville believes that manager Louis van Gaal needs to sign a central midfielder. Surely, they have enough?
Daley Blind and Ander Herrera are likely to be the Red Devils’ two central midfielders this season. Van Gaal himself stated last week that he prefers his compatriot and Netherlands international Blind in defensive midfield (click here to read more). And Herrera was signed from Athletic Bilbao earlier in the summer for £29 million to feature in central midfield.
Herrera is a versatile player who also possesses an attacking mindset, but he is likely to be used more in a conservative role by Van Gaal as the season progresses.
When fit, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher will provide valuable back-ups in central midfield, while Marouane Fellaini still remains a part of the team.
The Belgium international had a season to forget in 2013-14, but he will be determined to make it a success this term, either in a central role or in a more advanced position.
