United’s 17-year-old winger scores yet again; is first-team chance close?

Demetri Mitchell cannot stop scoring for Manchester United's under-18s, so how long before he gets a first-team chance?

Manchester United winger Demetri Mitchell continued his excellent scoring form by netting the only goal of the game as the club’s under-18s beat their Stoke City counterparts on Saturday.

Mitchell is making considerable waves at Old Trafford, and his goal-scoring form shows no sign of stopping as he netted a 25th-minute winner for Paul McGuinness’s side.

The 17-year-old was recently linked with a possible loan move to Southampton, and while that failed to materialise the simple fact is many clubs will be paying attention to the England under-18 star’s development.

Three weeks ago Mitchell netted a hat-trick against Newcastle United’s under-18s and prior to that he scored four goals in an 11-0 win over Goal Coast Academy.

With a contract that expires next summer, United boss Louis van Gaal has a pretty easy decision to make. Surely he will offer the teenager a new deal sooner rather than later, because if he does not, there are plenty of clubs out there who would love to have Mitchell at their disposal.

While most United fans are currently talking about the likes of Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson, if Mitchell keeps this up he could be the latest youngster to make a name for himself at Old Trafford.
