Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is in line to be the club’s next permanent captain according to reports in Belgium.

The defender was said to be closing in on a new deal at White Hart Lane last week, and now Sport Wereld claims that not only will Vertonghen sign a new deal, but he is also in line to be the club’s next skipper.

Following the departure of Michael Dawson, Mauricio Pochettino has a decision to make – one he said would not be taken until after the summer transfer window had closed.

That is now the case, and the latest report claims he is competing with Hugo Lloris and Younes Kaboul for the armband.

In other news, Pochettino has been talking about the heavy defeat Spurs suffered against Liverpool last time out, and what the club is doing to put that behind them.

In quotes published by London 24, the Tottenham boss said, “Because we had time, we had two weeks to prepare for Sunderland and a lot of players were away. We had time to analyse it.

“We need to improve in a lot of things but we need to improve our mental preparation. This is an important way to work in this club.”

Their next match is against the Black Cats this afternoon, and Tottenham will be hoping to consign their last league game to the past and get back to winning ways.
