Real Madrid have been linked with a move for reported Manchester United target Kevin Strootman.
The Netherlands international has been widely tipped to be Louis van Gaal’s top midfield target, with some reports claiming a January transfer is not beyond the realms of possibility. However, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claims the Spanish club are also circling.
The Roma midfielder is said to be the ideal replacement for the departed Xabi Alonso, while Sami Khedira’s injury also means Real could be casting an admiring glances towards Italy.
While the German international is not expected to be out of action for too long, his latest setback could have Carlo Ancelotti pondering whether or not to strengthen his central areas further to ensure he has plenty of cover in the future.
If Strootman does become available – and it remains a big ‘if’ despite recent rumours that he wants to a move to Old Trafford – van Gaal will surely do all he can to ensure the 24-year-old becomes his latest superstar signing.
But the fact that Real have allegedly joined the race will not please the Dutchman, who knows he is a box-to-box midfielder and an experienced centre-back away from having practically a perfect team.
