On this day: AVB on Ozil; McCarthy pleased he rejected Liverpool

On the 13th September 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 13th September 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 13th September 2013…

Ozil over-priced

Much of the talk from a year ago centered around Mesut Ozil. Arsenal's record signing was all set to make a debut for the club this weekend a year earlier, if he could overcome a stomach bug.

The £42.4 million club record signing for Arsenal was all set to feature against Sunderland, but then Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas believed the club had overpaid for the attacking midfielder.

He stated:

"Real Madrid sold a player for 50million euros; a wonderful, gifted footballer and in the end Arsenal paid heavily for a player of that dimension. It’s a €50m transfer for a No 10 who nobody has any doubt over his ability. They have lots of players for that position but they have become stronger with Ozil."

At the moment it is fair to say AVB was correct, as Ozil has so far struggled to live up to his price-tag.

Mersey McCarthy

James McCarthy was speaking about turning down Liverpool when he was younger. The Everton midfielder turned down Liverpool to remain with Scottish side Hamilton:

"I had a week’s trial at Liverpool when I was still young, only 16, but I was happy to stay at home to be honest. I wanted to stay at Hamilton and get some first team games. I’m thankful I did because it worked out really well."

Now a fixture at Everton this comment endeared him to the Evertonian faithful even more 12 months ago.
