Liverpool player ratings: Coutinho, Markovic and Sakho struggle

Coutinho Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers' side produced an amateur performance as Aston Villa left Anfield with a 1-0 win on Saturday. Here's how the players rated...

Simon Mignolet - 6/10

Looked all at sea for the goal, which was the only real time he was tested.

Alberto Moreno - 6/10

Showed sharpness going forward but needed to draw off the confidence of others to truly come out of his shell. And, unfortunately for Moreno, confidence was low across the board for the Reds.

Dejan Lovren - 5.5/10

Lovren's passing was his only saving grace but, defensively, especially from set-pieces, the Croatian was poor today.

Mamadou Sakho - 5/10

Lovren, however, was not as bad on the day as Sakho, who looked truly woeful during set-pieces and struggled once again on the ball. Once Martin Skrtel returns to fitness, Rodgers should drop his experiment and re-install the Slovakian as soon as possible.

Javier Manquillo - 6.5/10

One of Liverpool's more impressive performers on the day, the right-back was full of energy. He couldn't make up for his team-mates' lack of spark, though.

Steven Gerrard - 6/10

Emmanuel Adebayor recently praised the Reds skipper but the burden should not have to fall on him to produce for Liverpool every time. While Gerrard was nothing more than average today, his team-mates let him down big time.

Jordan Henderson - 6/10

His worst game for a while - perhaps he is tired after international duty? Henderson often ended up getting in the way at Anfield rather than helping his team-mates.

Philippe Coutinho - 4/10

The Brazilian has not looked the same player since he delivered a poor performance against Chelsea last season - bar a false dawn in pre-season. Coutinho is a fantastic player but he needs to stop looking for the extravagent every time he gets the ball. Hit the post once but looked absolutely limp at every other opportunity.

Lazar Markovic - 5/10

Unfortunately, £20 million man Markovic did not look much better than Coutinho today. The Serb clearly needs time to get match sharp. There was no end product today.

Adam Lallana - 6/10

This Liverpool debutant looked slightly more promising but his lack of fitness meant he could not deliver a strong enough impact.

Mario Balotelli - 6/10

The Italian is showing signs of promise at Anfield but looks ineffective without a strike partner. Showed classic Balotelli traits by tussling with Philippe Senderos for most of the game.

Raheem Sterling - 6/10

Came on in the second half but Liverpool had fallen into a pattern of lethargy by then. Rodgers' choice to rest Sterling from the start was admirable based on principle but, unfortunately, with Daniel Sturridge out injured and most of Liverpool's new boys not yet match sharp, it proved suicidal and was, quite simply, the wrong decision.

Rickie Lambert - 5/10

Looked poor after replacing Balotelli late on. Couldn't even control the ball properly at times.

Fabio Borini - 5/10

Showed energy but his final ball was completely inadequate. This was just a bad day at the office for Liverpool and shouldn't mean much if they heed the lessons from it and simply move on. But the performance, as a whole, was unacceptable for a club of their stature.
