Merson hopes Wenger isn't stubborn over this one area ahead of City test

Arsene Wenger Looks On

Arsenal take on Manchester City this weekend and one former Gunner hopes Wenger puts his faith in Danny Welbeck, rather than Alexis Sanchez.

Arsene Wenger must resist the temptation to field Alexis Sanchez in the primary centre forward's position over the more suitable Danny Welbeck when Arsenal take on Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, September 13.

Anything else would mean Wenger is guilty of "stubbornness" according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

The former midfielder, now 46, won two league titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup during his time in North London and believes Arsenal can kick-start their Premier League campaign providing Wenger fields Welbeck in his favourite position.

"Danny Welbeck ticks all the boxes for Arsenal and is exactly what Arsene Wenger wants – £16million for an England international who has already played for a big club is great value," he said.

"He’s just scored two goals for his country in midweek and that makes things even better. I would say he needs to play as a centre-forward and I just hope the manager isn’t stubborn and plays Alexis Sanchez ahead of him because I think he can definitely make Arsenal a better team.

"I honestly think they will beat Man City on Saturday. You see complacency in Man City (why else do they lose to teams like Stoke?) and they aren’t going to kick Arsenal off the pitch.

"Man City beat them 6-3 last season, but Arsenal had as many chances in that game and it wasn’t a steamrollering. I think City will lose this – and that would be a disaster for them."
