Leeds linked ex-Watford boss reveals motivation behind shock quit decision

Former Watford boss Giuseppe Sannino has explained why he quit Watford, and in effect ruled out becoming Leeds United manager.

Sitting second in the Championship after five games, Giuseppe Sannino's resignation at Watford at the end of last month came out of the blue.

The Hornets went onto appoint former Brighton manager Oscar Garcia as his replacement, while Sannino has until now remained quiet on the reasons for walking away.

It was originally speculated he had done so due to a better offer being on the table, with his fellow Italian, Leeds owner Massimo Cellino firing Dave Hockaday days earlier.

The timing appears coincidental now, but it was less clear cut at the time, with the bookies installing Sannino as favourite for the job in the aftermath of his decision to walk away.

He has since drifted out to a 28/1 outsider, and those odds are likely to dramatically increase after his latest interview appeared to rule out another job in England in the immediate future, while he has also denied he is taking on any new jobs in his homeland.

Sannino is quoted by Football Italia: "The club was extraordinary, but I needed to be back in Italy.

"“I made the decision to resign, it was a wonderful experience given to me by an exceptional club patron like Pozzo.

“The club can continue its dream of winning the Championship. The club was extraordinary with me, but at this moment I needed to be back in Italy. There is nothing else to think about, no calculations or hidden messages. Do I have the Bologna job lined up? No, there’s nothing in it."

It appears Sannino's decisions were quit were personal, and that's as much as he is willing to let on for now. He's certainly off Leeds' radar, if he was ever truly on it, and Watford now must seek to continue strongly with a result away to sixth placed Charlton Athletic this weekend.
