Leeds duo still waiting for international clearance - Why it's not a blow

Leeds United duo Dario Del Fabro and Brian Montenegro are unlikely to feature against Birmingham tomorrow.

Leeds United summer signings Dario Del Fabro and Brian Montenegro are yet to receive the international clearance that would allow them to make their debuts for the club against Birmingham City tomorrow.

We reported earlier in the week that the pair were expected to feature in the under-21 match against Ipswich Town, which provided another summer signing Adryan, with a chance to show Leeds fans what they had gained for the first time.

Neil Redfearn would have some different options with Del Fabro in defence and Montenegro in attack, but it now looks likely the pair will have to wait to feature for their new club until after this weekend.

It shouldn’t be considered a blow for Leeds for several reasons.

Firstly, the club has a very large squad of first team players to choose from and while the pair would have given Redfearn extra options, the side still has good options heading to Birmingham.

Secondly, it also provides the duo with a chance to work on their physical and match fitness levels.

Even if they had already received international clearance, it would have been a risk for Redfearn to throw them straight into the side as they didn’t feature in that under-21 game earlier this week.

The next under-21 game for the club comes this Monday against Barnsley at home, which could be the first time the pair are seen in Leeds colours. That match also provides the backdrop of being a feisty Yorkshire derby.

Redfearn is under big pressure this weekend in terms of Leeds looking for their first win and his own position if he has aspirations of taking the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

Del Fabro and Montenegro will feature in the side this season but Redfearn has more than likely pre-prepared the side on the basis that neither would be available.
