The Spanish goal-scorer, who Chelsea paid Atletico Madrid £32 million for earlier in the summer, has taken little time to adjust to Premier League football as he has made an instant impact.
Commenting on the club's official website, he said: "I’m very happy to win this award. It is important to begin well at a new club and I’m pleased with both my start to the season and also the team’s, which is the most important thing.
"I hope to continue scoring goals to help out the team and keep making our fantastic supporters happy. I thank my team-mates as they have helped me win this award."
Chelsea take on Swansea City at Stamford Bridge tomorrow afternoon and Costa is in a race against time to convince manager Jose Mourinho he is fit enough to feature - however, it may be one he is winning…
Mourinho said: "As you know Diego came back injured but that was last Saturday, so he had one week to work hard with the medical department and he has a chance to play tomorrow.
"We have a training session now to confirm his condition and to make a final decision."
The club were recently linked with Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo, who is allegedly becoming disillusioned at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho offered two words in reaction to Chelsea being associated with the Ballon d'Or winner: "Forget it!"
On goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois being awarded a new five-year deal, Mourinho said: "Petr is a very intelligent guy. Nobody would expect Courtois to come back here and not sign a new contract.
"What happened was already very much on the table. Now we have Courtois under contact for five years and that's a good situation.
"I'm more than happy to have both in my team."
