Cleverley endured a difficult time at Manchester United and he will be hoping his loan move to Aston Villa can prove that he can be worthy of a place in the England squad. United had a disappointing season last time round and much of the blame and anger was directed at the 25-year-old.
Fans failed to see what he added to the team and even though he has 79 appearances for United and 13 England caps to his name it is hard to describe exactly what sort of midfielder he is. Recently he has said that he prefers to play in a midfield three but at United he was often asked to play in a deeper role which didn't suit him. Paul Lambert may now encourage him to get forward and rediscover his scoring touch which once saw him score 11 goals for Watford during another loan spell.
Tom was made a scapegoat for his club and national side's failings last season, even to the point where an online petition was launched to try and ensure he didn't make it into the England squad. This week, the Premier League decided to hold a Q+A session on Twitter with the midfielder which obviously led to plenty of joke questions aimed at him.
He admitted that he is delighted to be away from all the negativity at Old Trafford and can't wait to prove his doubters wrong. Speaking to the press this week he emphasised the fact it wasn't just him that underperformed last season and the negativity at the club has motivated him to prove everybody wrong.
The platform is perfectly set up for Cleverley at Aston Villa to showcase his talents, and along with Fabian Delph, they could help each other's England prospects blossom.
