Louis van Gaal says Robin van Persie is 'fitter than ever'

There were murmurs about the Dutch striker's fitness

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has said that striker Robin Van Persie is fitter than ever, and has rubbished rumours the Dutch front man will need an knee operation in the near future.

Van Persie has yet to complete 90 minutes this season in his two Premier League appearances but that appears to be the United manager's way to reintroduce him into the action after a World Cup where the Netherlands finished third.

The United boss is quoted by the club's official website, saying: "I think that Robin van Persie is fitter than [he was] for the World Cup. He was injured before it but he fought to be there.

"Maybe you remember that I let him train for the first three weeks before he entered into a game. I think he is fitter than I've ever seen him before."

If he is fit, then van Gaal will now want him firing and playing as well as he did for him at the World Cup. United have struggled in the opening stages of the season but now they have spent a vast amount of money on marquee signings, the hope is that the side can now put the poor start behind them and kick start their season with a win against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

Van Persie will be aiming for a season as productive as his first campaign at Old Trafford, when he won the Premier League's golden boot for scoring 26 goals.
