Gary Neville's confidence in Wilshere comes from one Bolton moment

Arsenal academy graduate Jack Wilshere has the makings of a top international player, according to Gary Neville, who recalls one Bolton Wanderers moment.

When it comes to appraising Jack Wilshere, England coach Gary Neville does not hold back.

The former Manchester United right back and recipient of 85 caps with England, has long believed that the Arsenal product has all the makings of an elite-level international - and the 39-year-old reminisced over the moment that convinced him the young Gunner could make it.

Speaking with talkSPORT on Thursday, Neville discussed Wilshere's capability in the holding role for England, his fitness record, what he needs to do to take his game to the next level and how the backchat he was witness to when Wilshere was on loan from Arsenal at Bolton Wanderers made him instantly "like" the 22-year-old.

"I've seen different reports how he fared," said Neville when reflecting on the Arsenal midfielder's performance playing in a defensive position for England against Switzerland earlier this week.

"If you said Wilshere would hold against their best player - Xherdan Shaqiri - it's a brave decision. He's got the mental strength to be a top international and he has the talent but he has to physically make sure he is free of injury.

"I played against a young Jack Wilshere when he was at Bolton Wanderers and he was all over me, talking to me, giving me backchat and gave me no respect but that showed all the hallmarks of a player - I like him! He's aggressive. He's massively talented and can set the tone for a performance."

Neville continued: "If you look at [Andrea] Pirlo and [Paul] Scholes, they're not holding midfield types. But Wilshere can get on the ball and loves being on the ball, playing for a club who play the best football year in year out.

"Roy Hodgson has trust in him as well as the other coaches. We think he is a talented player and why not make him a central figure in what was a big game. Yea, it could have back-fired. But Hodgson is capable of making those brave decisions."
