Sunderland performed well during their 1-1 draw with Manchester United last month but slipped up at Queens Park Rangers in their most recent outing.
In contrast, Tottenham Hotspur downed QPR by four goals to nil, destroyed AEL Limassol by an aggregate score of 5-1 but were most recently upset by Liverpool.
For former Arsenal star Paul Merson, Spurs will have too much talent in their starting XI to obtain anything other than a positive result when they travel to Sunderland on Sunday as he expects a 2-0 win for the Lilywhites.
"I’ve watched Sunderland quite a few times this season," commented Merson in his preview column for Sky Sports.
"They did well against Man United, but against West Brom they didn’t do very well and against QPR they were terrible.
"I think Tottenham will suffocate them, despite losing to Liverpool in their last game.
"Liverpool were very good that day and I think that showed Spurs are still some way behind the top teams, but I’m definitely going for an away win this week," concluded Merson.
