Nicolas Anelka was linked with Fiorentina and Palermo before agreeing to join Indian side Mumbai FC but it seems the Serie A clubs couldn't afford him.
The 35-year-old has agreed to play in India until December, joining a string of stars headed for the inaugural Indian Super League season.
Anelka had been without a club since leaving West Brom under controversial circumstances earlier in the year.
The French international's agent has clarified that while there was interest from Italy, Anelka's wage demands made him an unrealistic proposition for a Serie A side.
"Anelka signed a deal with Mumbai FC and so there is no chance of a U-turn.
"The contract will expire on December 25th, so there are no problems.
"Anelka asked for £1.2 million per season and that salary is beyond reach in Italy. We spoke to Palermo, but nothing came from it."
