£37m Arsenal and United summer target was never leaving, says president

William Carvalho never came close to joining another team this summer.

This summer Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho was one of the most wanted men on thr transfer market. Premier League teams in particular were very keen on the player.

Manchester United were the first team credited with an interest in the player. If David Moyes was still in charge they probably would have snapped him up. However Louis van Gaal is not believed to be as keen on bringing Carvalho to United so the interest died down.

Arsenal were also linked with a move for the player, as an alternative to Sami Khedira. Carvalho, who of course has a release clause in the region of £37.5 million, was heavily linked with Arsenal up until transfer deadline day - but The Gunners did not tie up a deal.

Chelsea were also said to be keen, while Arsenal and United are said to be keeping tabs on his progress ahead of a potential January signing.

But it is not just Premier League teams interested in the player. The likes of AS Monaco and Italian side Juventus were also keen on the player.

As were Inter Milan. And Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho was asked about the apparent interest in Carvalho, specifically from Inter, this summer. Which he laughed off, stating:

"Was William close to Inter? Maybe but only if this summer he has gone past Milan on a plane to go on vacation. He is a part of our team. He only came close to Sporting."

Reports however suggest that while in Manchester the president will begin talks with English clubs over a potential January transfer.

But as for the summer, it appears as though nothing was ever in the pipe-line.
