AC Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez believes new teammate Fernando Torres will bring more to the club than the departed Mario Balotelli.
Milan moved Balotelli on to Liverpool this summer for £16 million after just 18 months at the club, before ultimately bringing in Torres from Chelsea on a two-year loan deal to act as his replacement.
The Spanish striker’s recent scoring troubles have been well documented but Lopez, who also joined the Serie A club this summer, believes his compatriot brings certain intangibles to the pitch that make him a far better fit than his fellow front man.
‘He's a great signing. We're talking about someone who has done amazing things, who has experience, speed, and will be important,’ he told Milan Channel. ‘Balotelli? Torres will be more useful as he has shown the characteristics needed to win.’
Despite his noted behavioural issues, Balotelli still managed to net 30 times in 54 games during his time with Milan, while Torres managed just 14 goals in 59 total appearances for Chelsea over the same period.
The 24-year-old Italian still clearly has a great deal of promise to fulfil, as oppose to the 30-year-old former Liverpool man, but he will need to prove during his Anfield stint that he can put his past problems behind him in order to reach his full potential.
