Three reasons Aston Villa 'won' the international break

Aston Villa can be extremely happy with their situation following the international break.

The international break was immensely frustrating for some sides but it’s been a great period following the transfer window for Aston Villa.

There is plenty for Villa fans to be positive about ahead of their weekend trip to Anfield as they look to go one better than the 2-2 draw they managed their last season.

Firstly, the international break saw Fabian Delph make his international debut for England against Norway.

That was backed up with a start against Switzerland as Roy Hodgson trusted the midfielder with responsibility in the middle of his team, as England got their Euro 2016 qualification campaign off to a winning start.

Delph responded positively and after an early yellow card in that game, he settled down and produced a commanding midfield performance which has increase his Premier League profile.

Add to that the recent reports surrounding a new deal for him and the club has to be praised for appearing to move to tie down the future of one of their most important players.

Delph proved against the Swiss that he can be an extremely versatile and effective midfielder under pressure, with several clubs in the Premier League and across Europe in need of a player like him.

There was a breakout of worry at one stage relating to another player, Jack Grealish, when rumours started that Chelsea were considering going after the Villa youngster ahead of the winter.

Again, the club did well to nip that rumour in the bud with reports coming out from the Birmingham Mail that a new deal had been put to the 19-year-old. Talks had been ongoing for a while but the local paper claimed an offer had been made.

The fact no official announcement has yet been made about him signing it shouldn’t be a major concern because plenty of modern day contract negotiations take several offers before a deal that the player is happy with.

Add to the mix the fact none of Aston Villa’s players on international duty picked up injury problems, while those still at the club trained hard for the weekend, and Villa can be very happy with the way the last nine days have panned out following the close of the transfer window.
