The highest paid financial CEO of all

Pot Of Gold

And this may surprise you.

GAMCO Investors' Mario Gabelli was the highest paid CEO among stock brokers and asset managers in 2013, according to a report on executive compensation released Monday by researchers at SNL Financial.

MarketWatch reports that Gabelli, who founded GAMCO in 1977, took home $85m last year. His payout was directly tied to the company’s profits.

GAMCO’s assets under management have nearly doubled over the past few years, ending 2013 at just over $47bn. They were up 29% last year alone. Gabelli’s 2013 salary was equal to about 0.18% of the company’s assets under management at year-end.

Gabelli’s compensation has grown steadily over the years as well. In 2012, he pulled in $69m, up from $61.7m in 2011 and $56.6m in 2010.

Gabelli earned nearly twice as much as the founders of private equity firm KKR Henry Kravis and George Roberts. They each earned about $44m in 2013, landing them in second and third place among the top 10 highest paid asset manager CEOs.
