Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has been talking up new Liverpool signing Mario Balotelli as the type of player the Premier League needs.
Dein told TMW at the SoccerEx exhibition in Manchester on Tuesday: "Balotelli is a special guy and you have to handle him carefully.
"In my opinion, the league needs players of his nature and he has character."
Dein's former club Arsenal were strongly linked with a transfer for Balotelli this summer, but failed to act on the much-speculated interest.
The reason Wenger was so reluctant, reportedly, was his concerns over the Italian international's unpredicatable character.
This came a year after the club bid for Luis Suarez, but arguably Wenger just did not believe his talent outweighed the negatives.
Liverpool clearly felt differently, whether it was a need to fill a Suarez-shaped void at the club, or pure belief they can mould Balotelli into one of the world's best, Dein certainly believes the Reds decision have made a choice for the good of the league.
Dein was one of Arsene Wenger's closest allies during his time at the club, and whether he would have liked to see Arsenal take the risk on Balotelli or simply wants to enjoy him from a neutral perspective he does not discuss, but it's possible if he were still there he would have attempted to convince the Frenchman to take the gamble.
