Aston Villa teenager Jack Grealish looks to be one of the club’s building blocks for the future but, with his contract set to expire next summer, the Daily Star claim that Chelsea are already eyeing up the promising winger.
Grealish, 18, spent the majority of last season on loan at League One side Notts County, scoring five goals in 39 games to help the team stage a dramatic escape from relegation, while earning rave reviews for his performances.
Going on to make his first-team breakthrough this term, the Birmingham-native and lifelong Villa fan has spoken of his desire to tie his future down to the club long-term but discussions over a new deal have thus far stalled, with a reported £5,000-per-week offer needed to be upped in order to prevent his potential departure down the road.
However, at this early stage of the season, fans of the midlands outfit shouldn’t necessarily panic, with the youngster’s noted commitment to the club meaning he will likely give them every opportunity to make him an enticing enough offer before his head can be turned.
Furthermore, one would hope the Republic of Ireland under-21 international recognises that he has a much better chance of securing regular first-team football at Villa Park than at Stamford Bridge, where the plethora of attacking talent has seen the development of numerous bright prospects stunted in recent seasons.
That said, while it remains to be seen whether Chelsea’s rumoured interest is genuine, Paul Lambert and the club’s hierarchy should still be doing everything in their power to ensure there is absolutely no risk of one of the so-called bigger sides poaching Grealish, or they risk causing uproar among supporters.
