The player linked with a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur or Sunderland instead looks set for a move to Benfica.
The 30-year-old was released by Spanish side Valencia and is now seeking a new club, with Sunderland also said to be a possible destination.
However, Portuguese newspaper Record claims Jonas’s brother is soon due in Lisbon to discuss a move to Benfica, a switch which according to the report could be finalised in the coming hours.
With Tottenham relatively light in attack compared with many of their Premier League rivals, the link with Jonas made a modicum of sense – at least until it was later revealed that Tottenham had used up their quota of non-home-grown players in their Premier League squad.
After all, here was a player who could move outside the transfer window, would not command a fee and who has netted 104 goals in 271 club appearances, including 52 for Valencia.
But even when Tottenham were first linked with the player, the pull of regular first-team football was said to be swaying Jonas towards a move to Portugal, and it appears that could now be close to becoming a reality.
As for Tottenham, they will have to hope Emmanuel Adebayor, Harry Kane and Roberto Soldado can keep them in contention for a top-four place until at least January.
