Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski has paid tribute on Twitter to good friend Michael Schumacher, following news that the Formula One legend has returned home to continue his recovery from a near-fatal head injury suffered in a skiing accident in France last December.
The seven-time world champion hit his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in Méribel, and was placed in a medically induced coma at a French hospital in Grenoble to help reduce the swelling of his brain.
He was transferred to a clinic in Lausanne in June after regaining consciousness, from where he made the short 25-mile journey on Tuesday back to his house at Gland on the Swiss shore of Lake Geneva.
Podolski has shown his support for Schumacher multiple times in the past, wearing a pair of specially made boots for last season’s FA Cup final win, as well as dedicating Germany’s run to World Cup glory this summer to his compatriot.
The two have been on close terms for several years, with Podolski having grown up near Schumacher’s hometown, while the former Ferrari driver is also a fan of the Gunners front man’s old club, FC Koln, and even helped fund his return from Bayern Munich for a second spell in 2009.
