Manchester United’s transfer deadline-day signing Daley Blind was in action for the Netherlands against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old versatile player, who can play both as a defender and as a defensive midfielder, started for the Oranje in their opening Euro 2016 Group A clash at the Generali Arena in Prague.
Blind featured for the entire 90 minutes, but it did not end in glory for the 2014 World Cup semi-finalists as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat to their hosts.
Borek Dockal gave the Czech Republic the lead midway through the first half, and Vaclav Pilar scored in injury time to win the game.
However, United’s £14 million summer signing did make an important contribution in the match, and it came 10 minutes into the second half.
Blind found himself with the ball on the left wing and floated in a perfect ball for Stefan de Vrij to head home from close range.
Interestingly, De Vrij was linked with a move to United in the summer. The Dutch central defender’s impressive displays in Brazil combined with ‘the Louis van Gaal connection’ reportedly made him a transfer target for the Red Devils, but the 22-year-old eventually left Feyenoord for Lazio.
