Tottenham latest, Schneiderlin on staying put, new Vertonghen deal

A selection of the latest news involving Tottenham Hotspur this Tuesday evening.

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has said he aimed to have left the club for a side in Europe, after being targeted by Tottenham during the summer transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino previously worked with the Frenchman at St Mary's, but Schneiderlin ended up staying on the South Coast after the club held firm.

However, quotes have appeared expressing his disappointment, but acknowledged the reasons behind him staying at the club.

He's quoted in the Evening Standard, saying: "There were offers on the table but Southampton made a clear choice, which was to keep me after the departure of certain players. They look to me for the future.

"I was 'blocked' but I must accept that because I have three years remaining on my contract. I could not afford to make a fuss and not play. I owe a lot to Southampton, who enabled me to make the France national team."

Jan Vertonghen's agent has claimed the player is close to agreeing a new contract at White Hart Lane.

Mustapha Nakil told Sky Sports: “We have spoken to Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good – we hope to sort everything out very soon.

“He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager."

The club has announced it's goal of the month for August on the official Tottenham website. Eric Dier's stoppage time strike on the opening day of the season against West Ham United came first with 41.8% of the vote.
