The Arsenal midfielder played in an unfamiliar holding midfield position.
England manager Roy Hodgson decided to adopt a formation which had a diamond in the middle of the park - with Wilshere at the base, sitting in front of the back four.
Several people had their view on Wilshere's performance in the position. Some suggested that Wilshere can become a very accomplished player in the role if he plays it more often - whilst others may think it limits him somewhat given that he is a fan of taking on players in the middle of the park, being more of a creator rather than someone who shields the back line.
The reaction from people on twitter seemed to be more negative than positive, but amongst many sections of the media there was praise for him. Some were positive about the Arsenal man's performance, whilst others raised several question marks.
Here is a small sample of what was said by the fans:
Never seen a holding midfield player give the ball away as much as Wilshere.— Billy Gray (@Billygray4) September 8, 2014
Jack Wilshere doesn't have the passing range required to play holding midfield in a diamond formation, or the tactical discipline— Billy Shepherd (@BillShepz95) September 8, 2014
If this team was on form Wilshere would be nowhere near the starting 11— James Bridge (@jbridge93) September 8, 2014
This is better but on what planet is jack wilshere a holding midfielder?— daniel shiels (@danielshiels) September 8, 2014
Wilshere has to learn to use the ball quicker. Always wants to take a player on. Played pretty well overall— Michael Noone (@MichaelNoone4) September 8, 2014
Wilshere keeps thinking he's playing with arsenal. England players don't want the ball in tight spaces like the arsenal ones do— ☠ (@JamzLdn) September 8, 2014
